Triay-Brea and Coello-Tapia assert their dominance on Mexico’s Caribbean coast

The world’s leading padel pairs, Gemma Triay and Delfina Brea, alongside Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, claimed top honours at the second edition of the Cancún Premier Padel P2. Triay and Brea successfully defended their title at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Center Costa Mujeres, overcoming the No. 2 seeds Bea González and Paula Josemaría—whom they faced for the first time—to secure their second title from three events in 2026.

Matching that tally this season are the so-called ‘Golden Boys’, who denied defending champion Juan Lebrón and his partner Leo Augsburger in what was their first final together. The fourth seeds arrived in outstanding form and produced a contest of the highest level, ultimately falling just short on fine margins (6-7, 6-3, 7-5 to Coello and Tapia).

UNBEATEN UNDER SEBA NERONE

The Minorcan-Argentine duo have now won all eight matches since Seba Nerone took charge in Gijón. With just one defeat so far this year—the final of the Riyadh Season P1—Triay and Brea claimed their 11th title as a partnership. Sunday’s final was settled in two contrasting sets (7-6(4), 6-1): González and Josemaría, the No. 2 seeds, pushed hard in a tightly contested opening set in which they recovered and briefly took the lead, only for it to be decided in a tie-break that went against them.

A key moment came when Josemaría missed a straightforward smash into the net, handing over a crucial break (4-3). From that point on, Triay and Brea stepped up a gear and never relinquished control—taking the first set and dominating the second to seal the title.

Speaking afterwards, Triay explained the tactical approach: “Today we won as a team against two very dangerous attacking players. The lob was crucial—if it wasn’t good, we suffered. The key was knowing when to use it and when to play from below.”

With this victory, Triay draws level with Ariana Sánchez on 54 professional titles, both now just four behind Alejandra Salazar, the most decorated player in women’s padel history.

COELLO RULES IN MEXICO AS TAPIA LEADS THE WAY

‘King Arturo’ continues his perfect record in Mexico, remaining unbeaten in Premier Padel events in the country. Alongside Agustín Tapia, the pair continue to build their legacy, now with 33 titles together. Individually, Tapia moves to the top of the active players’ list for career titles, overtaking Alejandro Galán.

Premier Padel brought the curtain down in Cancún on the shores of the Caribbean and now moves swiftly on to Florida, where the second edition of the Miami P1 is underway at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The world’s best players now turn their attention to the United States of America.
