After 27 spectacular matches played at the Madrid Arena, we now know the winners of the first edition of the Hexagon Cup. The opening competition of the tournament featured 36 of the world’s best players spread across six teams.
The team champion this first year has been the AD/vantage Padel Team. Andy Murray’s team has won in the women’s category, in the men’s category and the only team capable of getting its three pairs into the semi-finals of the tournament. They have been the most consistent team all week, and this is reflected in the final standings. Rounding out the podium are Robert Lewandowski’s team and the Rafa Nadal Academy powered by Richard Mille.
“Being part of the first Hexagon Cup and witnessing our AD/Vantage Padel Team become team champions for the first time makes me incredibly proud of the whole team,” said Andy Murray. “Padel is an exciting and dynamic sport. The winners of the Hexagon Cup in the men’s draw were Juan Tello and Martín Di Nenno from the AD/vantage Padel Team, who faced Alex Ruiz and Franco Stupazcuk, from the Rafa Nadal Academy. Rafa Nadal’s academy against Andy Murray.
The women’s category would be decided between the two best pairs of the tournament: the duo of the Hexagon Team: Tamara Icardo and Ale Salazar and the AD/vantage Padel Team: Sofía Araujo and Delfi Brea. The match started with the Hexagon team setting a very high pace: Tamara’s punch and Salazar’s defense managed to win 6-3. They were one set away from victory, but Delfi and Sofia have been suffering all week and coming back until the end, today would be no less. Sofia took a step forward and with her aggressiveness coupled with Delfi’s volume of play they achieved a resounding 6-1. The title would be decided in the 10-point tiebreaker. An agonizing super tiebreak in which Andy Murray’s team managed to take the victory after three match points and a magical drop shot by Delfina Brea that is already history of the tournament.
